Ruttonjee Hospital

Design Concept

This hospital redevelopment was planned by Mr. K. H. Chau, whom has carried out many notable hospital designs in Hong Kong before merging as Chau, Ku and Leung Architects and Engineers Ltd.

Ruttonjee Hospital history goes back more than 140 years, it was originally a naval and military hospital, and later a tuberculosis sanatorium with patronage of Mr. Jehangir Hormujee Ruttonjee, founder of Hong Kong Anti-Tuberculosis Association. Wan Chai Road was once the water front to the harbor, and upon this redevelopment, old relics like a granite gateway to the waterfront promenade and stone capstans were preserved.

Master planning of the Hospital redevelopment was in many intricate phases, to maintain operation of the original hospital throughout the new construction. It involves planning of the internal roads, and adding a new entrance from Wan Chai Road in addition to Queens Road. The demolition of the old hospital made room for new rehabilitation garden, following the original sanatorium tradition of having a large garden with mature trees for patients’ rehabilitation. It now also became a local open space for the built up neighborhood.  The original stone capstans are displayed in this garden.

The new Ruttonjee Hospital opened in 1991, but was planned and equipped to, and commenced serve as a General Hospital since 1998, including the construction of the planned ward extension.
